These paintings are done in oils and in each instance the fish were left on their wrapping papers, the space suggested by the slant of the table top and direction of the light.
Because of the nature of fish (whether dead or alive), it is necessary to paint them fast. Therefore, these paintings were done quickly, usually in one day.
I chose fish because I like the range of shapes and colors coupled with the strange sensation of painting something acceptably dead which was once alive and swimming in an ocean. They combine grace and beauty with grotesqueness and are wonderful subjects as different species suggest different painting approaches.
